How Spain salary and taxes work
In Spain, employees pay two main deductions from gross salary: IRPF (Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas), which is the progressive income tax, and Social Security contributions.
The IRPF rate is progressive, ranging from 19% on the first €12,450 up to 47% on income above €300,000. Most employees in Spain have a withholding rate applied monthly by their employer. The final tax is settled in the annual declaración de la renta.
Employee Social Security contributions are approximately 6.35% of gross salary, with a cap on the contributable base (around €56,340 in 2025). Self-employed workers (autónomos) pay monthly flat contributions based on their estimated income under the new 2023+ tranche system.
Important: Actual net salary depends on your autonomous community, personal deductions, family situation, and the specific tax year. These calculations are estimates for planning purposes only.
